County’s volleyball teams bring the heat

The sound of squeaking sneakers and volleyballs thudding against gym floors means one thing in Ozark County, fall sports are in full swing. 

All four of the county’s high school volleyball teams (Gainesville, Bakersfield, Lutie and Dora) have hit the court, each bringing its own energy, talent and determination to the season. From packed bleachers on weeknights to long bus rides across the Ozarks, the girls are already making memories while fighting for wins.

Bakersfield Lady Lions

The Bakersfield Lady Lions, coached by Suzanne Montague, have opened their season with a slate of challenging matches that are already helping the young squad grow.

Bakersfield kicked things off on Aug. 28 with a road win over Dora, taking the match in four sets. The Lady Lions couldn’t carry that momentum into the following night, falling in straight sets at Couch, and then dropped another tough three-set match to Cabool on Sept. 2.

The team bounced back on Sept. 4, traveling to Koshkonong and earning a four-set victory, their second win of the season. Since then, Bakersfield has run into strong opponents, falling in three sets to Eminence on Sept. 5 and Houston on Sept. 8.

The Lady Lions now turn their attention to a busy stretch of games ahead, starting with a home contest against Thayer on Sept. 9, followed by trips to Viola, Arkansas, and county rival Gainesville Sept. 16. They will also face Koshkonong again on Sept. 18 before heading into the Big Spring Conference Tournament at the end of the month.

Dora Lady Falcons

The Dora Lady Falcons, coached by Brandi Montgomery, have been keeping their early-season schedule packed with competitive match-ups, testing themselves against both familiar rivals and new challenges.

On Sept. 2, the Falcons earned a solid home win over Ava, taking the varsity match in four sets. Dora came out strong, winning the first two sets before dropping the third. In the fourth, the Falcons showed resilience, rallying back from a 12-3 deficit to claim the victory. Sophomore Montgomery Mitchell led the charge with 4 service aces, 11 kills and 13 digs, while senior Loghan Bruce paced the offense with 13 assists. The JV squad also came away with a win, sweeping Ava in two sets.

The Lady Falcons traveled to Gainesville on Sept. 4, where they dropped a hard-fought varsity match in four sets and fell in two close games at the JV level. The following evening, Dora hosted Summersville. The varsity squad was swept in three sets, but the JV bounced back with a two-set victory.

Over the weekend, Dora competed in the first-ever Conway Tournament, where the Falcons showed grit despite facing lineup challenges. One of the team’s starters suffered an injury, forcing players into new roles. Even so, the Falcons came together to earn wins over Bradleyville and Dixon, while dropping matches to Conway and Seneca. Their efforts paid off with a third-place finish in the tournament, a result Coach Montgomery said reflected the team’s determination and ability to overcome obstacles.

Gainesville Lady Bulldogs

The Gainesville Lady Bulldogs are finding their rhythm early this fall, starting the season with a string of convincing wins that showcase both their talent and their depth. Under the direction of coach Heidi Gaulding, the varsity squad has built a 7-1-1 record while the junior varsity remains undefeated at 4-0.

Junior middle hitter Addie Alms has been a steady force at the net, combining powerful swings with scrappy defense. She recorded double-digit kills in each of last week’s matches, including 17 kills and 21 digs in the Bulldogs’ four-set victory over Dora. Freshman outside hitter Macy Hambelton made her presence known in that same game, adding 12 kills and 5 aces, while sophomore libero Rylee Kowerduck kept plays alive with nearly 20 digs. Setter Baylor Hewett continues to anchor the offense, handing out more than 40 assists in the win over Dora and consistently spreading the ball around.

The Bulldogs’ serving has been another bright spot. Against Koshkonong, Alms and freshman Avery Gaulding combined for 11 aces, and sophomore Twyla Parkison added 4 more against Dora. Those aggressive serves have helped Gainesville control momentum and keep opponents off balance.

The junior varsity has mirrored the varsity’s success, taking straight-set wins over Koshkonong, Dora and Bradleyville to remain unbeaten.

Lutie Lady Indians

The Lutie Lady Indians are in just their second year of high school volleyball, and though the team is still finding its footing, the growth and effort on the court are clear. Coached by Roxsel Pellham, the Lady Indians have opened their season against tough competition while continuing to build the foundation of their young program.

Lutie began the year at the Koshkonong Tournament on Aug. 30, where they faced Gainesville, Niangua and host Koshkonong. The Lady Indians fell in straight sets to both Gainesville and Koshkonong but battled to a one-set draw against Niangua, showing flashes of their developing potential. On Sept. 4, the team traveled to Seymour, dropping a three-set match but gaining valuable experience. Their next test will come at the Couch Tournament on Sept. 13.

With just three returning players from last year, the roster is filled with new faces including one junior, two sophomores and five freshmen. 

Pellham said she is proud of the strides her players are making each day. Though the early-season results have been challenging, she notes that the team is improving incrementally and gaining confidence with each outing.
