Plan for crosswalks, signs and speed bumps at Gainesville School approved

High School Drive in Gainesville, pictured above, runs in front of the Gainesville High School. The city council gave permission to the Gainesville School District to install crosswalks, lighted signage (similar to the sign above, right) and speed bumps across the city street to make it safer for students and others to cross.

Gainesville School Superintendent Justin Gilmore submitted a proposal to the Gainesville City Council requesting permission to paint two crosswalks, install lighted signage (similar to that pictured above, right) and install five speed bumps across High School Drive, the roadway that runs in front of Gainesville High School.

The school is currently renovating a recently purchased building that housed the former Real Life Church, located across the street from the school, into classrooms that will be utilized next school year, in addition to building a sports complex next to it. That means students and other patrons will be continually crossing the street during school hours and during games, school official say.

Councilwoman Lana Bushong said the school plans to paint two crosswalks across the roadway and install a speed bump on either side of each crosswalk with one speed bump in the roadway between the two speed bumps.

Gilmore had originally requested a lowering arm blocking the road during crossing, but city council members weren’t in favor of that plan due to feedback from the community they’d received against the proposal.

The council voted unanimously to accept the plan for the school to install the items in the most recent proposal.

The school will purchase and pay to have them put in.

“I appreciate the city council working with the Gainesville Board of Education to ensure the street in front of the school is safe for students driving and walking. The district is hopeful the crosswalks, speedbumps and stop signs create a safer school zone for our students,” Gilmore told the Times.
