Giant mum

Pottersville resident Zelda Beavers, 88, proudly shows off her giant yellow mum. Zelda says she bought the mum as a small plant two years ago at Cash Saver in West Plains. She planted it in her yard and put a little extra dirt over it during the winter so the roots didn’t freeze. The mum has reemerged the last two springs, and she waters it and gives it a little fertilizer as it grows during the summer. It’s now about 4 feet wide. “I thought it never was going to quit growing,” she said Monday, “and then it finally started blooming.” She has four or five other mums in her yard, and one of them is almost as big as this one, she said. Zelda is the grandmother of Gainesville License Office agent Robin Morrison.
