Daffron takes over as OCSD K9 handler

Ozark County Sheriff’s Deputy Alan Daffron is the current handler for OCSD K9 Deputy Rye, a German shepherd that joined the force a little over a year ago. 

Daffron joined the Sheriff’s Department in May after leaving his post as a deputy with the Howell County Sheriff’s Department. 

“I’ve trained my personal dogs for hunting and later worked on training my German shepherds for Schutzhund competitions, which involves tracking, obedience and protection,” Daffron told the Times. “I have always had an interest in being a K9 officer. Sheriff Cass Martin has given me that opportunity.”

Daffron says he’s really enjoyed his time working with Rye in the two months he’s been with the department. 

“It’s been a great experience. She’s very intelligent and a pleasure to work with as well as live with during our time off. She quickly became a part of our family,” he said. 

Deputy Daffron and Rye recently were certified together by the North American Police Work Dog Association, which establishes a working standard for all police dogs, handlers and trainers through an accredited program, he said. 

“We continue training every week with surrounding agencies setting up scenarios letting the K9s and K9 officers do their job,” he said. 

Daffron began his law enforcement career as a reserve officer in Howell County, eventually transitioning to a full-time deputy. He’s been active in the Howell County SWAT for seven years.
