Last week, instead of letting the status quo in the swamp continue – taxing folks until the cows come home – I joined President Trump at the White House to mark the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. It’s very simple; this new law will allow you to keep more of what you earn by sending less of...
I would like to thank the skilled nursing unit at Gainesville Health Care Center for my care and therapy following a total hip replacement Nov. 13. The staff got me off to a great start with my new hip, and I appreciate their teamwork and also their willingness to let my husband, David, stay with...
I want to put in my two cents’ worth about the Christmas displays not being put out this year around the square in Gainesville. Christmas is not a happy time for everyone. A lot of families can’t be together. A lot of people don’t have much, material-wise or food-wise. Sometimes it takes very...

Letter to the editor
On behalf of the Ozark County Chamber of Commerce, I extend our apologies for not setting up Christmas decorations on the courthouse square this season.  With a complete change of board officers and delegation of duties, the decorations were – unfortunately – not properly time managed.  As your...

When it came to Christmas gifts, Dad was all about practicality. I know I must have received some toys or other impractical gifts when I was very young, but from age 9 or 10 onward, the gifts were always things I needed: coats, shoes, shirts, jeans, etc. There was never money to waste on...

Most of the other students are unknown, but Beulah Collins Smith, the teacher, is the dark-headed woman standing in front of the door of the school, which still stands on Highway 181 south of Rockbridge.

The Isabella VFW Post 5366 had a great turnout for our Thanksgiving Day dinner; 120 people were fed. A lot stayed afterward and visited and munched on desserts. Everyone thanked us, and several told me they would have spent the day alone and that they were so glad they came. We invite everyone to...
If someone blindfolded you, took you for a ride and then took the blindfold off after they led you into a house, you would still know if you were in a farmer’s home. Coming in the back door, whether through a garage, porch, mudroom or utility room, you would most certainly see a row of muddy (and...
The era of strategic patience and capitulation symptomatic of the Obama administration and its approach to North Korea finally ended last week. President Trump has now formally declared and labeled North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism. What does that mean? It’s simple: President Trump is...
