Grover Leon Johnson, 87

Funeral services for Grover Leon Johnson, 87, of Dixon, were held Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023, at the First Baptist Church in Dixon. Mr. Johnson died Nov. 15 at his home near Dixon surrounded by his loving wife and children.

He was born Oct. 5, 1936, in Gainesville, the son of Tony “Marvin” and Maxine Grisham Johnson.

He was a 1954 graduate of Gainesville High School. He also graduated from Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State University), and he served in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Johnson was a cattle farmer, banker, business and family man, and also a mentor to many. He was a true tradesman, from beginning to the end, and would never pass up a great deal. He was happiest on his lawnmower, brush-hogging, checking cattle, watching Cardinal baseball, and Bulldog basketball, especially when his grandchildren were playing.

His banking profession spanned more than 40 years, from being an examiner to the president of the Bank of Bourbon, and the former State Bank of Dixon. People sought his advice and benefited from his counsel, his unfailing work ethic and his leadership to employees and customers.

He accepted the Lord at a young age. During his life, he served his country and his community, but most importantly he served the Lord.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle Miller Johnson of the home; one daughter, Janet A. Lyons; two sons, Joseph Johnson and Jamie (Dena) Johnson; stepson Jason Simmons; Bonnie Herd Johnson, the mother of his children; 16 grandchildren: Shelby Lyons, Vicky Lyons, Ashley Sherrell, Jonathan Johnson, Ryan Johnson, Cory York, Devon Cardin, Miranda Johnson, Danielle Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Kylee Brown, Kyler Simmons, Heaven McCraken, Marissa Mangner, Kyler Mangner and Anastasia McGaughey; 11great-grandchildren: Hendrix, Amelia, Kendra, Kane, Kasen, Klay, Taylor, Haley, Annabelle, Phoenix and Blake; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Vicky Lee Johnson, who died April 13, 1985; one son, John Alan Johnson, Aug. 19, 2007; two granddaughters, Jessica Nichole Johnson, Sept. 8, 2023, and Gracie Simmons May 4, 2009; one brother, Eugene “Gene” Johnson, Sept. 9, 2021; one sister, Wilma Watson, Sept. 7, 1982; son-in-law, Scott G.
