George Armstrong, 74

George Martin Armstrong, 74, of Springfield, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2026.

He was born prematurely on Sept. 25, 1951, in Trenton, New Jersey, to George H. and Mary A. Armstrong. At birth he received too much oxygen which caused him to go blind. He had limited sight during his youth and took full advantage. Although he crashed a bit in the process, he learned how to ride a bike and enjoyed it as much as he could before complete loss. George was extremely intelligent and even made his own glasses in order to devour books, take apart radios and televisions and repair them. George's love of learning made him an excellent student. George learned to speak some German, Spanish and French as well as sign language and braille. George enjoyed watching wrestling, Star Trek and the Eagles playing football with his sister Bernadette, talking on CBs with everyone he could, writing poetry, playing guitar and ukulele and singing every opportunity he had. In fact, George wrote his own song, and music, appropriately named "Little Touch of Heaven.”

George will always be loved and remembered fondly by those blessed to know him. He was a comedian, an excellent teacher and an inspiration, especially when it came to his faith in God, and he truly led by example.

George is survived by his son Timothy James, his sister Florence Davis of California, his sister Bernadette Armstrong of Gainesville and several nephews and nieces.

George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Armstrong, his brothers, Ralph P. Armstrong, William D. Armstrong, Bruce T. Armstrong, Mark W. Armstrong, Steven D. Armstrong, his stepson, Dennis Deichmeister, as well as aunts and uncles.
