Daniel “Hambone” Hamby, 59
A celebration of life for Daniel “Hambone” Wayne Hamby, 59, of Dora, will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 2, 2024, at the gravel bar across from the bridge at Dawt Mill in Tecumseh. Those attending are asked to bring a lawn chair.
He died Feb. 7, 2024, at Barnes Jewish Hospital, losing his battle with congestive heart failure.
He was born March 6, 1964, in Kansas City, Kansas.
He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and, despite getting a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) in 2017, was determined to live life to the fullest. Nothing could keep him away from the river or the woods, doing what he loved.
Danny grew up in Dora and graduated from Dora High School in 1982. He was well known in the community and truly loved calling Dora home. Those who knew him heard stories of his shenanigans all over the world and his promises to take them fishing or hunting.
He worked at Bruce Hardwood Flooring for years and later made a career out of welding. As a welder by trade, he utilized his accomplished skill set within the states and abroad. After welding for almost 30 years, the transition to early retirement was difficult.
He was good at "causin’ a ruckus, chasing women and telling tall tales about hunting and fishing," his family says.
Deer and turkey were his game of choice to hunt, but he also wouldn’t hesitate to rescue and raise an orphan fawn along the way. He could spend all day fishing for crappie, white bass, stripers and spoonbill using fishing techniques learned from his dad and many years of developing his own tried-and-true strategies.
He leaves behind his family and many life-long friends who never stopped supporting him, along with the Barnes hospital staff who became family to him over the years.
Danny was preceded in death by his father John Hamby, grandparents Fred and Maxine Hamby and grandson Treyton Hamby.
