Vernice Jones Herd, 91

 

Vernice Jones Herd, 91, of Thornfield, died March 11, 2022, at the Gainesville Healthcare Center. 

Funeral services were held March 14 at the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home chapel in Gainesville with Doyle Turner officiating. Burial was at Thornfield Cemetery. 

She was born May 8, 1930, at Foil, the oldest of two children born to Robert “Bob” and Lois (Lawson) Jones.

On Feb. 19, 1948, Vernice married Buddy Herd, and they had one son, Gary Herd. 

Vernice was the fourth generation of her family to live in Ozark County. 

She worked at many different jobs including those at Mar-Bax shirt factory, at Spaldings and as a cook and bus driver at Thornfield school. 

Most of her work, however, was spent self-employed as a Silver Dollar City doll maker for about 25 years. She later made dolls for Little House at Mansfield. 

Vernice was preceded in death by her parents; one brother Wayne Jones; and her husband Buddy Herd.

She is survived by her son, Gary Herd and wife Carol of Thornfield; one granddaughter, Gina Herd and partner Ron Harden of Tecumseh; and one great granddaughter Sarah Hawkins of Tecumseh.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Thornfield Cemetery fund.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Gainesville.
