Student found with gun in backpack at Gainesville School

The Gainesville School District issued a statement this morning, Aug. 27, informing parents and the community that a student was found in possession of a firearm on school property today. Superintendent Justin Gilmore told the Times that the firearm was found in a backpack inside the school, and the student said it was accidentally brought to school. Gilmore said he can't release any other information, as it is part of an active investigation.
He emphasized that the situation was resolved quickly. The firearm was secured, and the student's parents were notified. The student was removed from the school premises, and Ozark County Sheriff Cass Martin is currently investigating the incident.
Below is the email that was received by district parents:
Dear Gainesville R-V Families,
This morning, a firearm was found in the possession of a student on school property. The situation was handled immediately and without incident. At no time was there a threat made toward students or staff.
As required by Missouri’s Safe Schools Act, law enforcement was contacted, the firearm was secured, and the student’s parents were notified. The student was removed from school pending further review in accordance with district policy and state law.
We want to reassure you that:
- The situation was resolved quickly and safely.
- Student and staff safety remains our highest priority.
- We are following all required legal and disciplinary procedures.
