Matthew J. England Memorial 5K winners

Winners of the Matthew J. England Memorial 5K held in Gainesville Saturday morning were, from left, (front row) Isabelle Workman, Carson Smith, Jack Smith; (back row) Jama Berry, David Dwyer, Cynthia MacPherson, overall male winner Frank Cottey, Tim Prososki, overall female winner Jamie Rigdon, Shelly McDaniel, Denzil Jennings, Mike Breton, Amanda Smith and Audrey and Dylan McKinney. In the second photo, overall male winner Frank Cottey and and overall female winner Jamie Rigdon are pictured with their first place prizes – fire pits donated by The Home Depot, where Matthew once worked. Matthew’s mother, Pamela Hengen, organizes the race and holds it each year on the Saturday before Veterans Day in honor of her son, who was killed at the age of 22 when an insurgent’s homemade bomb blew up his Army vehicle in June 8, 2011, while he was serving in Iraq. Proceeds from the race go to a scholarship fund she set up in Matthew’s name for Ozark County graduating seniors.
