‘These honored dead’ Acknowledging the sacrifice of those who gave everything
Ozark County War Memorial
Today we take time to note, with gratitude and sorrow, those with Ozark County ties whose lives ended while they were serving in the military during wartime. They are the men whose names are engraved on the Ozark County War Memorial on the courthouse lawn – as well as others whose names have surfaced since the memorial was erected in 1991.
As another Memorial Day approaches, we recall the words of Abraham Lincoln as he stood over the battlefield cemetery at Gettysburg on Nov. 19, 1863: “From these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
