The Gainesville Lady Bulldogs brought home a second-place finish at the Cabool Tournament last week after a strong three-game run highlighted by tough defense and a milestone performance from junior Addie Alms.
Gainesville, the tournament’s top seed, opened play Monday, Jan. 19, against eighth-seeded Koshkonong and earned a 45-30 victory. Alms led all scorers with 20 points and reached the 1,000-point mark for her high school career during the contest. “Accomplishing this milestone during her junior year is a credit to all the hard work she has put into improving her game as a player,” GHS Coach Nathan Houk said. “Her teammates also deserve a lot of credit for getting her the ball. Many times a post player’s ability to score is dependent on their teammates getting them the ball.”
Macy Hambelton added nine points, followed by Sadie Walker with six, Baylor Hewett with five, Emma Donley with three and Mylie Frye with two.
Hambelton led the Lady Bulldogs on the boards with seven rebounds, while Alms pulled down four. Walker paced the team with eight assists and added two steals.
The Lady Bulldogs returned to action Tuesday and defeated fourth-seeded Laquey 60-37 to advance to the championship game. Alms once again led the scoring, pouring in 26 points. Walker added 19 points, Donley scored 12, Hambelton had six, Hewett finished with four and Addi Garrison chipped in two.
Walker led Gainesville with nine rebounds, and Hambelton dished out six assists in the win.
The victory sent Gainesville to Friday’s championship game against third-seeded Hartville. The Lady Bulldogs trailed 15-13 at halftime before taking a five-point lead in the third quarter, but Hartville rallied and held on for a 36-27 win.
“We had a hard-fought battle with Hartville in the championship game,” said GHS coach Nathan Houk. “We were down 15-13 at halftime and came out in the third quarter and took a five-point lead. Hartville battled back and took the lead going into the fourth quarter. We were unable to recover and suffered a 36-27 loss. I was proud of our effort. We struggled to score, but battled on the defensive end of the floor. Our defense kept us in the game; more consistent offense could have changed the result.”
Alms and Walker were named to the all-tournament team for their performances during the week.
The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action at the Lady Tiger Invitational in Seymour beginning Thursday, Jan. 29. Gainesville will face Liberty–Mountain View in the first round before returning Friday to take on Willow Springs.
