GHS’s new ballfields are starting to take shape

Gainesville High School head baseball coach Blake Hobbs stands on the edge of the school’s new baseball and softball complex, which is currently under construction.

Gainesville School’s new sports complex, which is being built across the road from the high school on property that formerly encompassed the Gainesville Municipal Airport, is back on construction schedule after a delay due to the city and school coming to an agreement pertaining to how the school would source water to supply the fields’ irrigation systems. That matter was settled early last month, and the school is planning on using an old well on the campus for that purpose.

Since that time, the fields have received a layer of green sod, and water lines have been run under High School Drive to funnel into the irrigation systems, in addition to other work.

School officials expect the fields to be finished and ready for play in the spring. The project, which is expected to cost around $1 million, was approved by the school board in April. It is being built with school district funds. The other fields that have been utilized by the high school team for many years will still see use through summer league baseball and some practices and games as needed. The Gainesville Lions Club owns the fields and leases them to the school for $1 per year.
