Gainesville students shine at annual Bulldog Trebuchet Open chess meet


There were 36 Gainesville students who participated in the Feb. 21 Bulldog Trebuchet Open chess tournament.

GES - Elementary team In the elementary division, the GES team took first place. Individual finishers included, from left, Mikey Laird, third place; Hudson James, sixth place; Holten Nash, fifth place; and Willie Meharg, eighth place.

GJHS - Jr. High team In the middle school division, the GJHS team took second place. Individual finishers included, from left, Madilynn Skaggs, 10th place; and Melody Lowery, right. Lucas Summers, center, and Levi Miller (not pictured) also contributed to the team success.

GHS high school team In the high school division, the GHS team took third place. Individual finishers included Nathan Ortiz, 10th place, far left; and Bryar Swartz, 10th place, third from left. Maddy Loftis, second from left, and Kyle Molka, far right, also contributed to the team’s success.

Gainesville students demonstrated strong strategic skills during the Bulldog Trebuchet Open Chess Meet held Feb. 21, where the district hosted competitors from eight schools across the region.

 

Gainesville Elementary team  takes first place

In the elementary division, Gainesville captured the first-place team trophy. Individual finishers included Mikey Laird, third; Holten Nash, fifth; Hudson James, sixth; and Willie Meharg, eighth. Savana Schniedermeyer and Hayden Nash also placed in the top 10, finishing ninth and 10th, respectively.

 

Gainesville Middle School team takes second place

Gainesville’s middle school team earned the second-place team trophy. Top individual finishers included Melody Lowery, fifth, and Madilynn Skaggs, 10th. Teammates Levi Miller and Lucas Summers also contributed to the team’s strong performance.

 

Gainesville High School team takes third place

In the high school division, Gainesville placed third as a team. Nathan Ortiz finished seventh and Bryar Swartz placed 10th, while teammates Maddy Loftis and Kyle Smolka also competed for the Bulldogs.

In total, 36 Gainesville students participated in the tournament, showcasing teamwork, dedication and strong chess talent.
