Volleyball: Bakersfield Lady Lions battle hard on Senior Night
The Bakersfield Lady Lions Volleyball Team showed determination and heart this week as they faced off against Couch High School in a hard-fought match that ended just short of victory. The Lady Lions battled through four intense sets before falling 24–26 in the final set.
Despite the loss, the Lady Lions displayed exceptional teamwork and grit on the court. Eden Cotter led the offense with 7 kills, while Marlee Maynard came in clutch with 6 total aces — four of them in the fourth set — bringing the Lady Lions within striking distance of a win.
“The girls worked so hard and never gave up,” said Coach Montague. “They left everything out there tonight.”
The loss came just one day after a strong performance at Bradleyville, where the Lady Lions swept the Lady Eagles in three straight sets. The quick turnaround between matches didn’t slow them down — instead, it highlighted their resilience and competitive spirit.
Friday night’s game also marked Senior Night, as the program honored three graduating members: Keely Stevens, Lily Williams, and Miley Edens, who has served as team manager. Each senior was recognized for her dedication, leadership, and lasting contributions to the program.
“These girls have given so much to this team,” Coach Montague added. “Their work ethic, contributions to positive team culture, and steadiness have set the standard for the next generation of Lady Lions.”
With just three regular-season matches remaining, the Bakersfield Lady Lions are turning their focus to the upcoming District Tournament, scheduled for October 23–27. Coach Montague said the team hopes to carry its energy and unity into postseason play.
The Lady Lions are seeded fourth and will take on fifth seed Dora at 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 23 at Winona in the Class 1 District 7 Tournament.
