Lady Lions lose one, win one last week
The Bakersfield Lady Lions basketball team split a busy stretch of games last week, dropping a road contest before rebounding with an impressive tournament win.
Bakersfield traveled to Mountain Grove on Jan. 6 and fell 58–42 in varsity action. Head coach Doug Lansdown said the Lady Lions struggled to find their rhythm early.
“We started slow and made some poor decisions with the ball and let them dictate the flow of the game,” Lansdown said.
Sadie Davidson and Alyssa Gailey led the scoring for Bakersfield with eight points each. Aubrey Luna pulled down eight rebounds, while Keely Stevens added seven on the boards.
In the junior varsity contest, shortened to three quarters, the Lady Lions turned in a strong performance, earning a 49–23 victory. Addi Mayberry paced the scoring with 12 points, while Eden Cotter and Lexi Clarkson chipped in 11 points apiece.
The Lady Lions bounced back on Saturday, Jan. 10, with a dominant showing at the Liberty Legends Shootout in Mountain View. Bakersfield faced Mountain View-Liberty, a team that had edged the Lady Lions by two points earlier in the season, and came away with a convincing 53–16 win.
“We played a very strong game and won,” Lansdown said. “Our defensive effort was outstanding the entire game. We hope to build on that effort the rest of the year.”
Keely Stevens led Bakersfield with 15 points, while Aubrey Luna and Carrleigh Green added 11 points each.
Bakersfield will continue its schedule with a road game at Alton on Jan. 12, followed by a pair of home contests against Gainesville on Jan. 15 and Houston on Jan. 16.
