Bakersfield Lions win Houston tournament

The Bakersfield Lions brought home the Houston Boys Basketball Tournament championship trophy after defeating Cabool 65-58 Saturday, Jan. 20. The Bakersfield Lions dominated the Houston Boys Basketball Tournament last week and brought home the championship trophy after defeating the Cabool Bulldogs 65-58 Saturday, Jan. 20.
“I am extremely proud of how our guys competed this week. We had a lot of guys step up and play great roles which was a big factor in our success,” said Head Coach James Denton. “Now we’re moving forward and preparing for the last part of our regular season and looking forward to the challenges that are ahead of us.”
The Lions, who were seeded first, kicked off the tournament with a first-round 88-30 win over eighth seed Koshkonong Monday, Jan. 15.
The win led the Lions to take on fifth-seed Summersville on Friday, Jan. 19, in semi-final action. Bakersfield defeated Summersville 62-57.
Ethan Collins was named MVP of the tournament and Morris Collins also made the all-tournament team.
The Lions, now 12-8 on the season, were scheduled to host Thayer Tuesday, Jan. 23, and will travel to Dora Tuesday, Jan. 30.
