State-ranked Bakersfield girls basketball now 6-1

The Bakersfield Lady Lions varsity basketball teams, who are 5-1 on the season so far and state-ranked 10th in Class 2 high school girls basketball by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association (MBCA), headed into the 2nd Annual Gainesville Lady Bulldog Holiday Tournament as the number one seed.

They played tournament host Lady Bulldogs at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26 and won that game, 55-37. The Lady Lions then took on Mansfield at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27. Results of that game were unavailable at presstime.

Prior to Christmas break, Bakersfield traveled to Houston Tuesday, Dec. 17 where they beat the Lady Tigers 51-45. Callie Smith led the scoring with 16, followed by Lily Williams with 11. Others scoring for Bakersfield were Kelly Stevens 9, Sadie Davidson 6, Madison Melvin 4, Abby Griffey 3, and Hadley Stevens and Aubrey Luna 2 each. 

The JV also brought home a win, beating Houston 42-31 led by Carrleigh Green with 11 and Eden Cotter with 10. Others scoring were Ellie Wells 7, Riley Summers 6, Shaniah Foster 4, and Bristol Robinson and Alyssa Riley with 2 each.

The Bakersfield girls hosted Seymour Thursday, Dec. 18 and vanquished the Lady Tigers 53-21. Callie Smith led the scoring with 20 points, followed by Keely Stevens with 14. Others scoring for Bakersfield were Sadie Davidson 5, Lily Williams, Madison Melvin and Aubrey Luna with 4 each, and Hadley Stevens and Abby Duffey with 1 each.

Bakersfield’s junior varsity also chalked up another win when they slipped by the junior Lady Tigers 15-12. Played scoring for the JV were Eden Cotter  and Riley Summers with 5 each, Carrleigh Green 3 and Ellie Wells 2.
