Shorthanded Lady Lions still win over Gainesville

The Bakersfield Lady Lions have four of their standouts sitting out with injuries, but still found a way to win over a tough Gainesville squad Thursday night.
Lady Lions team members Oakley Dihel, Kandi Foster, Emma French and Sam Kuk were all sidelined with knee and ankle injuries when the Lady Bulldogs came to town last week.
Mikayla Durham stepped up for Bakersfield, tallying 24 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Lady Lions to a 52-49 win over Gainesville.
Gainesville's Shaina Naegele did her part to try to help her team steal a victory from the wounded Lady Lions. Naegele had 25 points to lead all scorers in the game.
"This is as good of a win as I have ever been part of," said Bakersfield coach Doyne Byrd. "We have four kids out with injuries right now that average a total of 45 points a game for us, and we still found a way to win.  I am as proud of this group as I could be for how they played tonight."
Betsy Minkler had 15 points for the Lady Lions.
Bakersfield also won the JV contest 32-30.
The Lady Bulldogs took another one on the chin on Friday night, losing to Couch 66-38. But Gainesville got back to its winning ways Monday night on the road in Conway, beating Conway 60-54.
Individual stats were unavailable from Gainesville coaches.
Gainesville will play in the Sparta Tournament on Jan. 2 while the Lady Lions will play in the Liberty Tournament Jan. 2-7.
