GHS Lady Bulldogs compete in Mammoth tournament

Gainesville High School  Lady Bulldogs traveled to Mammoth Springs, Arkansas, to compete in the Battle of the Border basketball tournament last week.

“The tournament was a good opportunity to face opponents we won’t face the rest of the season. Each team played a little different style, which was a plus,” said GHS head coach Morris Jenkins. “The outcome of one win and two losses wasn’t quite what we wanted. The games exposed areas we need to improve on as we continue our season.  Our rebounding and ability to limit our turnovers need to be a lot better.  We need to shoot the ball with more confidence. I feel we have very capable players, and this will improve.  Overall, the team competed well and had several good stretches that we hope will become more consistent throughout the season,” he said.

The Lady Bulldogs faced Cotter in Monday’s first round game, falling 46-37. Senior Shelby Smith led the scoring with 11 points and led in rebounds with 6.

Other players scoring were Abby Britt 9, Elizabeth Kinworthy 8, Cassie Carlo 6 and Brexton Miller 2. Britt led in assists and steals with 3 in each column.

The Bulldogs defeated Couch 71-42 in the second round. Britt led with 25 points, followed by Smith with 15 and Kinworthy with 10. Other players scoring were Carlo 5, Natalie Kiger and Miller with 4 each.  Ashley Poe chipped in 1. Carlo and Kiger led in rebounds, pulling down 7 each. Britt led in assists with 6, while Carlo led the steals column with 4.

Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs lost their bid for the consolation prize by just one point, falling to Calico Rock, 39-38.
