Gainesville Bulldogs remain undefeated after five games: Competing in Mansfield tournament this week

Hard work is paying off for the Gainesville Bulldogs, who still hold a perfect record after the first five games of the season. “I’m very proud of our effort on the boards and the focus from the boys in practice,” said coach Matt Powell.

The Bulldogs started their week with a home court win over Ava Tuesday, defeating the Bears 50-37. The Bulldogs were led by senior Brandon Poe, who scored 16 points, snagged 6 rebounds and had one assist and one steal.

Sophomore Jaxon Britt racked up 11 points and pulled down 5 rebounds, while senior John Hossman scored 9 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. 

Senior Brodie Chapman added 6 points, had 7 rebounds and five assists. 

Senior Wyatt Wilson led in rebounds with 8. He also racked up 8 blocks against the Bears and had one steal and one assist. Junior Garrett Morgan chipped in 2 points, had 2 steals and 1 block and a rebound.

Gainesville’s JV team had a close loss, falling by  2 to the junior Bears, 46-44. Players scoring were Jalen Evans and Tanner Jennings  with 16 each, Ben Pointer with 8 and Cody Donley and Ryelon Estes with 2 each.

On Thursday, Nov. 30, Gainesville hosted Kosko-nong, and both teams added wins to their records. The varsity Bulldogs defeated the Blue Jays 84-38, led by Poe with 24. Other players scoring were Chapman 18, Wilson 12, Justin Wallace 8, Britt and Hossman 7, Morgan 6 and Cody Donley 3. 

Wyatt Wilson had a great game against Kosh, leading in rebounds with 16. He also racked up 5 assists, had 3 steals and 1 blocked shot. Chapman led in assists with 7.

Gainesville’s JV defeated the Blue Jays 56-25. Players scoring were Tanner Jennings 17, Andrew Ball 14, Ben Pointer 9, Jalen Evans 8, Cody Donley 4, Parker Wise and Dalton Howard with 2 each.

The JV team’s next game is at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 11 when they play Alton in the Norwood JV tournament. They currently hold a 2-1 record.

The Bulldogs varsity team hit the road Friday, Dec. 1, to take on the Bradleyville Eagles. Gainesville brought home a 61-38 win. Players scoring for the Bulldogs were Poe 16, Chapman and Morgan 12 each, Britt, 9, Hossman 8 and Wilson 4.

Britt led in rebounds with 8, followed by Poe and and Hossman with 7 each. Chapman led in assists and steals with 7 in each column.

The Bulldogs are competing this week in the Mansfield Tournament, where they’re seeded fourth. 

Monday night they won their first- round game against fifth-seeded Houston, 65-31 and will play the No.1 seed Mansfield at 6 p.m. Thursday.

“We shot the ball really well last night (52 percent from 2 and 57 percent from 3) and continued to rebound and play defense,” said Powell. 

Brodie Chapman led the scoring with 19 and led the assists column with 5. He snagged 3 rebounds and had 2 steals. Garrett Morgan scored 13 points, had 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists. Brandon Poe scored 11, pulled down 2 rebounds and had 1 steal and 1 assist. Britt scored 7 points, followed by Wilson with 6 points. Willson grabbed 4 rebounds, had 2 blocks, 2 assists and 1 steal.

Wallace, Evans and Pointer chipped in 3 points each.

“We’re looking forward to Thursday’s game against Mansfield in the semifinals of their tournament,” said Coach Powell.
