Velva Florene Whisnant, 87

Graveside services for Velva Florene Whisnant, 87, of West Plains, were held Oct. 1, 2018, at Howell Memorial Park Cemetery near West Plains. Mrs. Whisnant died Sept. 25 at Brooke Haven Healthcare in West Plains.

She was born Aug. 2, 1931, in Gainesville, the daughter of Willy and Ruth White Strong. On May 15, 1959, in West Plains, she married Frank Whisnant.

Mrs. Whisnant loved her family, which was very important to her. She enjoyed gardening and working outside, and she loved her home and keeping it clean. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Whisnant, of the family home; two sons, Charles R. Whisnant and wife Jennie, and Tracey Whisnant and wife Tracy, all of West Plains; one step-daughter, Audrey Morian of Bellcourt, North Dakota; six grandchildren, Alan, Randy, Jess, Charlie, Jared and Michelle; several great-grandchildren, including a special great-grandchild, Lowell “Buzz” Stewart; two brothers, Thomas  Lawson and wife Debbie of Gainesville, and James Lawson of Dora; three sisters, Faye Warren of West Plains, Marie Brumbly of Oklahoma and Sharon Rich of Gainesville; three sisters-in-law, Sue Ward of Dora, Leta Mae Terry of Kansas City, Kansas, and Mickey Cox and husband Danny of Iola, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two children, Frankie Jo and Gregory Dean; one brother, Darrell Strong; her stepfather, Troy Lawson; four brothers-in-law, Cecil Terry, Oscar Warren, Jack Callahan and Merle Terry; and daughter-in-law, Terri Whisnant.
