Edward Jason Burt Jr., 87

Edward Jason Burt Jr., 87, of Theodosia, died Aug. 8, 2018, in Cox South Hospital in Springfield, surrounded by friends and family. Private family memorial services are being planned.

He was born May 1, 1931, in Queensbury, New York, the son of Edward Jason and Cora Mary Hermance Burt. He proudly served in the Army during the Korean War. Later, he worked as a prison guard and as a store employee in New York.

He moved to Theodosia in 2014 to be closer to family here.

He liked to stay active and enjoyed walking, especially in malls, thrift stores and flea markets. He played bingo at the VFW in Isabella, where he was a member. He also liked to work puzzles and to fish, and he enjoyed telling family friends about ice fishing in New York, cutting holes in the ice. He had an appealing sense of humor, and when he told a joke or said something funny, he often added, “Not lil ol’ me!” Until six years ago he enjoyed swimming and playing in the pool with his grandkids, usually wearing a little Speedo swimsuit.

He was loved by many family members and friends and will be missed.

Mr. Burt is survived by his children and their families, Christopher “Sonny” Burt and wife Phyllis, and Jason Burt, all of New York, Christy Williamson and husband Kevin, Jean Marie Noble, and daughter-in-law Vickie Shewsbury, all of Theodosia; stepchildren Clifford Steves Jr., Clyde Steves, Billy Steves, Wallace Steves and Calvin Steves, all of Oklahoma, and Clinton Steves of Texas; brother Clifford Burt and wife Barb of Arizona; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wives Ruth Burt, formerly of New York, and then by Lucy Lilian Burshee Burt, formerly of Oklahoma; his son Doug Burt; daughters Marlene Burt and Carol Ewing; step-son Wesley Steves; and sister Vicki Kingsley.

Arrangements by Holden Funeral Services, Sparta.
