Celebrating 90th birthday

Ozark County native John R. Sims, seated, center, now living in Mountain Home, Arkansas, was honored recently with a surprise 90th birthday hosted by his family including wife Guavana, pictured behind him with their four children, from left, Jeania Hood, Rick Sims, Terry Sims and Katherine Coffman. The day was made extra-special by visiting with life-long friends from Ozark County, including Marv Looney, Rex and Frances Johnson, Wilbur and Barbara Cowart, Loretta Walker, Catherine Wade (now from Ava), Bonnie Ebrite and Dorcas Rackley with daughters Barbara Luna, Kay Young, Patty Donley and Peggy Johnson. Other former Ozark Countians attending the party included Gary and Carol Ann Morrison of the Joplin area, and Anna Mae Pace with Vicki Wilson and Jay Pace, all from North Little Rock, Arkansas.  Another highlight of the party was a “memory jar” containing notes describing 90 special memories from his four children, nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. John R. was born Oct. 20, 1927, in Gainesville, the son of Paris and Nannie Sims. He married Guavana Eslick in 1949, and they owned and operated the Sims Locker Plant here for several years, with John R. eventually changing careers to become the MFA Insurance agent. In 1971, they moved to Mountain Home, where he sold real estate until retiring about 10 years ago.
