LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Asking commissioners to participate in National Flood Insurance Program

The recent stories in the Times about last year’s Great Flood and the recovery efforts are still timely as floods and droughts are seen as part of the climate changes currently underway. But what is also underway is that the county commissioners still want that tainted terrible federal money from FEMA but will not let us property owners have access to flood insurance.
Since Ozark County does not participate in the National Flood Insurance Program, no one who owns property within FEMA’s defined flood plain can get flood insurance. Even if you think you will never need it, you still cannot get a mortgage or loan, and thus you or your family or heirs can only sell your land for cash.
There are economic consequences to being stupid, and there ought to be political consequences for commissioners who deliberately undermine their constituents.
