Losses and blessings: Still recovering from the 2017 flood

The soaring new Irwin Cudworth Bridge over the North Fork of the White River reopened less than six months after (below) an historic April 29, 2017, flood destroyed the previous bridge at the site adjoining the North Fork Recreation Area of Mark Twain National Forest (known locally as Hammond Campground). Ozark County Presiding Commissioner John Turner said Monday it was “unheard-of” for such big bridges (the Cudworth Bridge on CC Highway as well as James Bridge, farther downstream on PP Highway near Dawt) to be built in such a short length of time. MoDOT’s quick work is counted by many as one of the unexpected “blessings” that occurred after the devastating flood.

‘Tin Can Tourists’ gather in Bull Shoals this weekend

When Mike Breton bought this 1946 Angelus trailer, it had been last licensed in 1947 – and that license plate was still attached. He has since sold it to a collector in Little Rock, replacing it with a “vintage-inspired” trailer with a few modern conveniences that make it more appealing to his wife, Karen.

Theodosia resident Mike Breton is helping organize a “vintage trailer rally” this weekend at Bull Shoals Dam Site Park in Bull Shoals, Arkansas.

The bite is still on!

Fishergirls Nora Welch, 9, right, and cousin Laney Suter, 13, caught 14 crappie in under an hour while fishing out of Theodosia Marina Resort on Bull Shoals Lake.

Fishermen (and fishergirls!) are enjoying some excellent fishing on Bull Shoals and Norfork lakes this spring.

KATELYN’S RUN OF FAITH

A year and a half of after debilitating surgery to remove tumors from her brain and sacrum, Katelyn Brantingham, right, finished the Go Girl half marathon in Springfield on April 14. Her friend and training partner, Cheyanne Broyles, ran the race with her; they finished ahead of time they’d set as their goal.

This time last year, Katelyn Brantingham was working hard to recover from surgeries she had in December 2017 to remove tumors from her brain and sacrum.
