Life-changing journey: Gainesville woman develops rare meat allergy derived from tick bite


Gainesville resident Annia Contreras was diagnosed in 2018 with a rare allergy to mammalian products, a condition called AlphaGal syndrome. The relatively rare disorder is becoming more well-known as a greater number of people are being diagnosed with AGS. The syndrome is thought to be triggered by a bite, or several bites, from the Lone Star tick. Contreras hopes to make more people aware of the allergy, especially health care professionals.

Ozark County VFD mutual aid shines as firefighters respond to three separate fires in Ozark County on Christmas morning


Bakersfield Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Kelly Fowler took this photo of Wayne Osborn’s home on County Road 355 south of Dora ablaze Christmas morning. Dora VFD chief Monte Shipley spotted the burning home as he was traveling back home after fighting a Bakersfield-area fire. The cause is unknown.
