Many cemeteries this weekend will be hosting Memorial Day gatherings and dinners similar to this one at Baptist Hill Cemetery, near Bakersfield, in 1971. The photo, from the collection of Jim C. Swain, shows Lena Swain Perkins and Iola Swain in the foreground. When Micheal Mahan posted the photo on the Bakersfield Missouri Historical Society Facebook page, several people posted reminiscences of the annual gathering. Janet Taber, whose Civil War veteran ancestor is buried there, described the cemetery as “a particularly serene, beautiful place. You can go there when no one else is around and almost hear distant echoes from events such as this one.” This year’s annual gathering at Baptist Hill Cemetery is set for Sunday, May 30.

The Gainesville High School Bulldogs beat the Seymour Tigers on Friday, May 21, to bring home the school’s first district championship in 30 years. The single-story ranch-style home in Theodosia where Karla Brown lived with six of her family members was destroyed Thursday in a fire of undetermined cause. Brown’s son, Dustin Brown, suffered smoke inhalation and superficial burns and was flown by Air Evac to Mercy Hospital’s burn unit. The family’s two dogs died in the blaze.
