Veterans Day closures and events

The Ozark County Courthouse and Gainesville City Hall and several other government offices will be closed Friday, Nov. 10, in observance of Veterans Day, which falls this year on Saturday, Nov. 11.

The Gainesville License Office will also be closed. Banks will be open Friday but closed Satuday, Nov. 11. 

The Center in Gainesville will be open Friday, and veterans will be served a free lunch, thanks to a generous donation. Names of veterans who come for lunch will be entered in a drawing. The winner will be given a free quilt made and donated by board member Nancy Thomas. 

The Ozark County Times will be open regular business hours.

Area schools are planning Veterans Day programs, and all veterans are invited. The programs will be held Friday according to this schedule: Bakersfield, 1 p.m.; Dora, 10 a.m.; Gainesville Elementary, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.; and Lutie, 9 to 11 a.m. Plans at Thornfield were indefinite at press time Tuesday.

The West Plains Veterans Day parade makes its way through downtown beginning at noon Friday, and a “Musical Salute to Veterans” will be held in the West Plains Civic Center Theater at 1:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to everyone.

In Mountain Home, Arkansas, the second annual veterans appreciation event begins at 1 p.m. with a free concert by 200 students in the Vada Sheid Community Development Center on the Arkansas State University-Mountain Home campus. From 2 to 4 p.m., a veterans fair in Dale Bumpers Great Hall will feature vendors from throughout the area. At 4 p.m. veterans will be treated to a free barbecue dinner of pulled pork sandwiches and sides. At 5:45 p.m., ASUMH chancellor Robin Myers will welcome veterans and guests into the performing arts center for patriotic music, followed by an Ashley McBryde “Heroes and Legends” concert. All events are  free for veterans (military ID required), but free tickets are required for the barbecue and evening concert (available at the development center). Tickets for veterans’ guests are $10 for the meal and concert. Tickets for the McBryde concert are available to the general public for $15 (floor) or $10 (risers). Thanksgiving closures

Looking ahead, the Ozark County Courthouse, Gainesville City Hall, The Center, the Gainesville Lcense Office and the Ozark County Times will all be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 23-24, in observance of Thanksgiving.
