Servant’s Heart Award goes to Gainesville LPN Sarah Hogan

Sarah Hogan, center, was presented with the Servant’s Heart Award, the highest honor presented each year during Nurses’ Week at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, Arkansas. BRMC Urology Clinic office manager Brandee Litty, left, and urologist Daniel Decker, M.D., were among those who nominated her for the honor.

Gainesville resident Sarah Hogan, LPN, was recognized by Baxter Regional Medical Center staff recently when she received the hospital’s highest nursing honor – the Servant’s Heart Award. The award was presented during a ceremony at the hospital in Mountain Home, Arkansas, on Thursday, May 9.  Each year during Nurses’ Week, BRMC staff members are invited to nominate a nurse who has demonstrated excellence in his or her area of practice, exhibits exemplary behaviors and goes above and beyond caring for patients and peers. Hogan was one of only two nurses chosen from 144 nominations to receive the prestigious nursing award.

Now the clinic charge nurse for the BRMC Urology Clinic, Hogan, an LPN for the past 13 years, has worked at the hospital for four years.

“I have never worked with or heard of anyone in any profession that is so competent, hard-working, compassionate, patient-focused, efficient and humble,” said Dr. Daniel Decker, clinic urologist. “She always goes the extra mile for patients and never seeks the spotlight or gratification for it. She is invaluable to our busy, high-volume clinic.”

Clinic office manager Brandee Litty agreed. “Sarah is such a patient advocate, going far and above what is expected of her. She is always willing to take on extra work, such as doing all of our expensive drug therapy authorizations, which are extensive and time-consuming, completely managing our very busy surgery schedule, staying late when necessary and never leaving behind work for her co-workers,” Litty said. “She has morphed into our clinic charge nurse and has enormous respect from the entire staff. I could truly go on and on. She is an excellent nurse and an amazing person. BRMC is very lucky to have her.”

Hogan said she was shocked to hear she was being presented with the award. “When they started reading my nomination story, and I realized they were talking about me, I was overwhelmed to the point of tears,” she said. “I was sitting in a room full of RNs that have 30-plus years of experience in the ICU, ER, OR and PACU, wondering why I was there. I look up to so many of them for wisdom and guidance. It was just so overwhelming to me.”

Hogan, the daughter of Ronnie Hambelton and the late Denise Hambelton, is married to U.S. Marine Corps SSgt. Kyle Hogan. They have two children, Owen, 6, and Emery, 4.
