Public meeting related to T&C liquor license set for Feb. 25

The Gainesville Board of Aldermen will hold a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, concerning Town & Country Supermarket’s request for a liquor license. All citizens are invited to attend the meeting.

The liquor license application, reported in the Jan. 30 edition of the Times, comes in conjunction with the store’s current remodeling project. Town & Country Markets president and CEO Joe Polizzi told the Times the company wants to carry alcohol in response to customer demand and “so that we can become a one-stop shop for them.”

Gainesville mayor Gail Reich said Monday the matter is being studied by attorneys for the city and the supermarket. One issue in the city’s consideration of the application is that the city ordinance pertaining to liquor licenses prohibits the sale of liquor within 300 feet of a church or school unless the council gives written approval. Since the First Baptist Church in Gainesville is a relatively short distance from the supermarket, property owners within 300 feet of the store are to be provided with a written notice of the application and the upcoming public meeting. Those written notices are being hand-delivered to those property owners, according to city clerk Lisa Goodnight.
