An old quilt decorated with sweet memories

Hardenville resident Mary Miller, 87, enjoys memories of friends and relatives from the past as she reads the names on the handmade friendship quilt that belonged to her mother, the late Hazel VonBehrens. Mary says the quilt, made of 30 blocks, each bearing the signature of a friend or family member, was a gift to her mother from friends while the family lived in Mattoon, Illinois. She remembers her mother and friends sitting around the quilting frames. During World War II, her family moved to Indiana “so Dad could work in the factories,” she said. After the war, her parents moved to mid-Missouri, where they had family. In 1988, Mary and her husband, Kenneth, joined them in the Show-Me state, settling in Ozark County. “My husband was an over-the-road trucker, and he moved us here for me. He knew I loved it here,” she said.
