Hootin an Hollarin outhouse race starts with a crash

This year's Hootin an Hollarin outhouse races on Friday afternoon began with a crash. The outhouse, which has no steering apparatus, drifted off course as the first team pushed off from the starting line, and within a few feet, the hillbilly structure had taken a plunge. Volunteers and race participants got it upright again, but the damage was too great to continue, and the backup outhouse was brought out of storage. The older, rattle-trap structure gave the race an extra edge of excitement as bystanders and team members wondered when the old rig's wobbly wheels would fall off. Amazingly, the rollers stayed attached. (See winners’ photos, page B3.)
