The Hootin an Hollarin horseshoe pitching competition returns this year

A horseshoe pitching competitor takes his best shot during the 2011 Hootin an Hollarin festival. The competition will return this year after being sidelined since 2014. The event, organized by Heath Treat, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot on Third Street across from Guffey Motors. Times file photo.

Hootin an Hollarin festival-goers haven’t had the chance to pitch a horseshoe at the yearly festival since 2014, but thanks to Gainesville volunteer Heath Treat, the free competition is making a comeback.  A horseshoe pitching competition will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot across from Guffey Motors at Third Street and Harlin drive west of the square.

Treat says the competition will be split into four divisions: men, women, juniors (12 and under) and teams. Pitchers are welcome to join in both the appropriate singles division and the team division. Teams consist of two pitchers of any age.

Trophies will be awarded to the first place winners in each category. Second place winners will also earn an award.

The event is free, and everyone is invited to join in – or come to watch. A lack of experience is not a problem, Treat says. Those wishing to participate are asked to show up at the event about 10 minutes early to register.
