City accepts land donation, revises burn-permit procedure

The Gainesville Board of Aldermen recently accepted a donation from Donald Amyx of paved property at Main and Fourth streets in Gainesville, according to the unofficial minutes of the board’s Oct. 10 meeting. The property, a little less than an acre, adjoins the parking lot opposite City Hall that the city recently purchased from Amyx.

Other business transacted by the board of aldermen at the Oct. 10 meeting included hearing a report on efforts to find and repair recent water leaks in city water lines. City clerk Lisa Goodnight said residents who notice any large amounts of water in unexpected places should contact City Hall at 417-679-4858.

The board has also accepted a new burn-permit ordinance. Goodnight said that, in the past, burn permits had to be signed by the fire chief or by the city’s maintenance superintendent, so citizens usually had to make two trips to City Hall – one to fill out the permit application and another to pick up the signed permit later.

The new burn permit makes it possible for the citizen to come in for a permit – and leave with it, Goodnight said. The paperwork “reminds them that they are responsible for contacting the sheriff’s department to advise them of a controlled burn and that they should have a water hose that is easily accessible during the burn. ... The purpose of the change was to make this easier on residents,” Goodnight said.

She cautioned that the meeting minutes the Times used in writing this story are still unofficial until approved or corrected at the board’s next meeting, to be held Nov. 14.
