Bakersfield benefit helps BVFD chief Greg Watts

Greg Watts

A benefit auction Saturday night to help Greg Watts, longtime Bakersfield Volunteer Fire Department chief, raised $5,176 to help with expenses related to his recent medical setback. Watts has been battling health issues since experiencing a severe and unexpected reaction to anesthesia during gall bladder surgery on Sept. 1.

After the auction, he posted his thanks on Facebook: “Words cannot express our thanks to all the great families that have helped me and my family recently. Thank you to everyone who baked goods, made donations, helped organized, worked and came out tonight. Thank you from the Watts family.”

Watts continues to serve as BVFD fire chief but said he’s slower now to respond to emergency situations because his health issues have impacted his legs and he’s moving more slowly than normal. But he’s still determined to carry out his fire department duties, he said. In fact, after the auction Saturday night, he responded to two storm-related calls early Sunday morning, helping a driver whose car became lodged on a downed tree in a roadway and helping clear another roadway of debris from a collapsed hay barn.

To assist the Watts family, checks may be mailed to P.O. Box 138, Bakersfield, MO 65609.
