Ready for school

Four-year-old Damon Anderson seemed thrilled to be in his new preschool classroom Monday evening as his parents, Holly and Bobby Anderson, chatted with Damon’s preschool teacher, Brandi Miller, left, during Gainesville Schools’ back-to-school open house. The gathering included a hamburger and hot dog supper at both the elementary and high schools sponsored by the Gainesville PTO and two informational sessions led by superintendent Jeff Hyatt to discuss the school district’s levy-increase request that appeared on Tuesday’s primary election ballot. Gainesville students’ first day of classes is Wednesday, Aug. 15. Bakersfield Schools’ open house is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, and classes there start Tuesday, Aug. 14. Dora’s open house is from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, with classes starting Thursday, Aug. 16. Lutie School is hosting a community open house and barbecue from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14; classes start there on Thursday, Aug. 16. Thornfield’s open house will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, with classes beginning Thursday, Aug. 17. Open house at Mark Twain School is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15; classes begin Thursday, Aug. 16.
