Cubbage Memorial Bass Tourney raises $1,350 for school groups
Mark Sanders of Ava won first place with an 18.4-pound catch in the 12th annual Verne Cubbage Bass Tournament March 31 out of Pontiac Cove Marina. Second place was won by Brad Welsh of Festus and Brandon Williams of Cape Girardeau with 17.4 pounds. Third place was won by Wyatt Grisham and Ray Grisham of Pontiac with 16.8 pounds. The fourth-place prize was won by Ken Lloyd of St. Charles and James Lloyd of St. Peters with 15.6 pounds. Fifth place went to Tommy Skinner of Protem and Mike Cox of Theodosia with 14.2 pounds. Ryan Smith won the Big Bass prize with a 5.4-pounder. The top youth angler was Reid Barnum of Ava, who fished with his dad, Josh Barnum.
The tournament raised $1,350 for Gainesville High School organizations, such as FFA and FBLA. The event honors the late Verne Cubbage who, after moving to the Ozarks and operating a fishing resort on Bull Shoals, had two favorite pastimes, fishing and driving a school bus for special events at Gainesville, his family said.
Gainesville student volunteers helped with the weigh-in.
