Lady Bulldogs end season with district semifinal loss to Fordland Lady Eagles

Gainesville seniors Shelby Smith, left, and Aspyn Britt were named to the Class 2 District 4 all-district team.

The Gainesville Lady Bulldogs’ season came to an end Tuesday, Feb. 20, when they lost to Fordland 39-34 in the semifinal round of the Class 2 District 4 tournament at Norwood. Gaines-ville was hoping to avenge a previous 34-point loss and advance to the championship round of the tournament, but shots wouldn’t fall for the Lady Bulldogs.
“This team showed a lot of heart and determination in this game, which I feel is a reflection of how they played the season,” said coach Morris Jenkins. “We demonstrated a willingness to compete hard, and because of that, were in a position to win this game. We just didn’t have the shots fall like we needed.   Having lost to Fordland by a wide margin a couple of weeks ago, they could have came into the game doubting,  but as I expected, the girls didn’t and played them tough to the end.”
Players scoring for Gainesville were Shayla Wages 15, Elizabeth Kinworthy 9. Shelby Smith 6 and Aspyn Britt 4. Cassie Carlo led in rebounds with 7 and Britt led in assists .with
“As a high school coach I hope that what we are doing is more than just trying to win games, and I feel this team got to have opportunities through the season that will benefit them past the games,” Jenkins said. “The girls gave great effort, showed poise and perseverance, worked as team and demonstrated a willingness to move forward even during tough moments.   Coach Lance West and I are very proud of the entire team and their commitment to Lady Bulldog Basketball!”
