A special thank you to the Masonic Lodge brothers who treated us “wives and widows” to a big chicken dinner Saturday at Cookie’s in Theodosia overlooking the lake. Bobby Grisham took me and another widow, Sue Tharp. At 95, I must have been the oldest of the wives and widows there.

What a pest I have had at my kitchen window birdfeeders! A squirrel – and maybe his partner – climbs my window screens and upsets and spills the sunflower seed that the little birds are trying to eat. When the seed spills, the birds have to eat it off the ground. It started when I heard a noise and looked out my window and saw the squirrel climbing the screens. They will eventually tear up the screens since modern-day screens are made of mesh. They aren’t made of wire like they used to be. There’s not much I can do except peck on the window and wish my cats, asleep on the front porch, would wake up.

I was thinking recently of my cousin, the late George Ebrite, and any thoughts of him remind me of the enjoyable times we had in years past when he would come from Ada, Oklahoma, for our fall festival. He would always expect me to have a peck or a half-bushel of pawpaws waiting for him, and I happily gathered them down on our creek place, along what they call the slough. I can’t go down there now, but I do enjoy remembering past trips. George loved for me to pick them when they were solid so he could take some back to Oklahoma. He would also eat some while he was here. I like them too. They kind of remind me of the flavor of muskmelon. George even dug sprouts and planted them in his yard in Ada. Many years ago, when I was out there, I got to see the two pawpaw trees he had living in his yard.

Our irises continue to be enjoyed this month at my place.

Jerry Miller enjoyed visiting with Nadine House and other members of the late Nova Pleasant’s family at the Dawt Church of Christ on Sunday.

The flu bug is still raging, according to my son Marlyn Pitcock and cousin Helen Conardy.

We send sympathy to the family of Maxine Friend DeBord, including her brother, Edd Friend and his wife Ina, and also his sisters Peggy Robbins, Polly Ousley and Fern Cantwell. Theirs was a large family.

Sympathy also to the Ivan Corp family of Blue Springs on the death of Ivan’s wife, Janice, and to the Al Gargione and Brenda Amyx families on the loss of their loved ones.
