GHS Lady Bulldogs suffer some close losses

Gainesville’s Lady Bulldogs fell to Seymour 9-8 on Tuesday, Sept. 5. “We lost on a walk-off hit again,” said coach Cody Swearengin. “The girls played hard all game, but a few things did not go our way, and we let Seymour stay in the game. They ended up capitalizing on our mistakes to squeak out a win against us.”

Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs traveled to Bakersfield where they competed in the Bakersfest tournament. “We beat Laquey 15 to 0,” said Swearengin. “The girls came out and did what they needed to do against them. Everybody that had an official at-bat got a hit. Even though it was a short game, Emily McKinzie threw a no-hitter. Laquey only had three base-runners the whole game which came from 1 walk and 2 errors.”

The Gainesville girls faced a very tough East Carter team in the second round and lost 12-0. “East Carter is a really solid team, to say the least,” Swearengin said. “It was good to play a team of that caliber to show us how much more we need to grow to compete against a team like that.”

The loss led the Lady Bulldogs to the third place game where they fought against Mansfield but lost, 5-2. “We had our chances all game long, but just couldn’t capitalize,” Swearengin said. “Natalie Kiger had an RBI triple for us ,and Lori Ellison had a triple for us as well that led to a run later on in the inning.”

Overall, Swearengin said he was pleased with how the girls never gave up. “We keep competing every game,” he added. “I am really proud of how well our girls support one another and greatly appreciate the fan base that has been showing up for our games. Seven of our nine losses on the season have been by three runs or less. The experience will pay off in the end.”
