The Gainesville High School Scholar Bowl team competed in district competition on Saturday, April 9, at Greenwood High School in Springfield. In the morning the team qualified for the semifinals (top four teams) but was defeated in the semi-final round by Diamond High School and finished in third place. Justus DeVries of Gainesville received a medal for placing in the top 10 individually. Pictured: front row, from left, Daniel Winrod, McKoy Dobbs, Victoria Smith and Yasmine Bray. Scholar Bowl matches consist of teams of four players each from two schools being asked questions in the areas of history, science, mathematics, literature, music and pop culture. There are “toss up questions” which are answered by an individual player when they buzz in, much like in Jeopardy. When a player correctly answers the toss up questions, their team is given three bonus questions which they may discuss to decide upon an answer. Each match is two rounds with 11 questions asked in each round.
