Free supper available to all Bakersfield students

Cash Brackney, son of Misty Wallace, enjoys supper provided by Bakersfield School. Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 5, all students on campus after school receive a free evening meal as part of a pilot program the school is implementing. “This program is different from the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program,” said Bakersfield superintendent Amy Britt. “Different rules apply with this grant, so all students are eligible for a free meal. We’re trying this with a cold meal that they can take home and eat, but our goal is to eventually provide a hot meal.” School officials are monitoring the effectiveness of the program to evaluate whether it will be continued.
