Man told to leave gas station returns, drinks stolen beer in bathroom and leaves in handcuffs

Matthew Olsen is being held in the Ozark County Jail on a $1,000 cash-only bond in a case in which he was indicted by an Ozark County grand jury of burglary and stealing (valued less than $150 and no prior stealing offense) in connection with a May 1 incident at Bullseye.

According to the probable cause statement filed by Ozark County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Rhoades, just after midnight Sunday, May 1, the officer was dispatched to a report of a disturbance at a Bullseye gas station in Gainesville.

“…[I] told the male that per the cashier, he was not allowed at the store any more due to him bothering customers and causing problems,” Rhoades wrote in the report.

Olsen reportedly left the store at that time, but sometime around 2 a.m. the officer was called back to the store as Olsen had returned.

“Upon arrival, I made contact with the reporting party and employee, Jonathan, at the location. A male, who had been asked to leave the store several times between midnight and [2 a.m.] had taken a Hurricane beer can from the store freezer and took it into the bathroom. Several minutes later he came out of the bathroom without the can. Jonathan asked where the can was, and Matthew pretended not to know,” Rhoades wrote in the report.

The cashier was able to convince Olsen to retrieve the beer can, which was empty, and the man smelled of alcohol.

Olsen did not pay for the beer, which cost $1.40. The clerk told the officer he’d like Olsen to be prosecuted.

“I confirmed his identity as Matthew Olsen, and from my prior encounter with him earlier in the night. When I arrived at the store, I saw Matthew beating on the store from glass door with his fist,” Rhoades reported. “He attempted to leave as soon as he saw me, but I was able to restrain him and place him in handcuffs.”

The officer informed Olsen he was being arrested for burglary and theft, and he transported the man to the Ozark County Jail where he was booked on the advised charges.
