Bulldogs win second at Mansfield Tournament

The Gainesville Bulldogs made their fourth consecutive trip to the championship game of the annual Mansfield Tournament this past weekend but lost to Ava in the first-place game 36-33.
Gainesville seniors Paxton Smith, Cody Garlough, Robbie Marshall and Logan Strong have all played for the championship in Mansfield every year they've been in high school. They were part of championship teams their freshman and sophomore years and have finished second the last two years.
The Bulldogs took down some tough foes to get to the big game, beating Houston in the first round of the tournament, 51-45 and then shocking the West Plains Zizzers 50-43 in the semifinals.
In the game against Ava for the championship, Cody Garlough and Zack Voss led the Bulldog effort with 10 points each, followed by Paxton Smith with 7.
Smith was the scoring leader in the game against the Zizzers, unleashing a three-point barrage. Smith nailed four treys and had 20 points on the night. Robbie Marshall netted 15 for the Bulldogs.
Gainesville will host Couch on Friday night at 6 p.m.
The Lady Bulldogs, meanwhile, after picking up a big win over Thayer last week, were stunned by Fordland 54-18 on Thursday night.
"Fordland is a tough team," said Gainesville coach Judith Tilley. "They are tall and shoot extremely well."
Shaina Naegele led the Lady Bulldog effort with 7 points, followed by Lakyn McGee with 4. Alyssa Abraham, Morgan Mendoza and Rebecca Prock each scored 2 points. Tali Rose had 1 point.
The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Bakersfield Thursday for a 6 p.m. contest and will host Couch on Friday night.
